The Good Practice Institute for Professional Psychotherapists - Dedicated to Psychotherapy Practice Excellence

About Good Practice  (scroll down for bio)
In  2007 I founded the Good Practice Institute as a forum to discuss all the elements of good clinical practice, to give resources and pracitce building ideas, and to bring together therapists from all over the country via telephone to consult on cases, share ideas, practice and learn together.

As a professional clinician I learned the value of self care and the importance of having a place of my own to talk.  In addition to the clinical beneftis and ethical mandate of talking about our cases with a trusted supervisor, my experience with supervision taught me an abundance about how to build and maintain a meaningful practice, how to work effectively, and be satisfied with my work.

My love of this work, and my belief in the value of a place for discussion and discovery that focused on my experience of my clients, and how to work with all the issues and feelings that come up led me to make promoting and providing supervision a priority in my work.

My own supervisors have given me so much by way of insight, guidance, support, suggestion and training.  They have helped me build my practice, steered me through ups and downs in my business, difficult cases and lots of feelings. But mostly they have given me a good ear, and for that I am most grateful.

By listening to the stories of treatment with trained and kind analytic attention, supervisors model good practice.  Of course there are many things that go into good practice, but somehow, I always come back to supervision as the cornerstone.

I hope to add resources and ideas to this site that will enhance and support the work that you do, and encourage you to make a space in your work to talk about it all!

About Melissa Groman, LCSW
Melissa Groman is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a private psychotherapy practice in NJ.  She received advanced training in Psychoanalysis at the Academy for Clinical and Applied Psychoanalytic Studies (ACAP) in NJ where she is a doctoral candidate.

The focus of her studies, in addition to supervision, is the treatment of  couples, addictions, eating disorders and adolescent girls.   Mrs. Groman is a graduate of Yeshiva University's Wurzweiler School of Social Work.

Mrs. Groman recognized a great desire for on-going dialog resources and training among her colleagues, but discovered that geography and travel constraints were obstacles for many to get it.  With that in mind, she founded the Good Practice Institute to offer resources and supervision for social workers and psychotherapists in a format that connects therapists from all over the country.

Her work focuses on the gentle understanding and study of relationships, effective interventions with clients and all the elements of good and effective practice, and professional satisfaction.
